Riverside Schools Programme
Bringing pupils to the water's edge
The Riverside Schools programme connects primary and secondary school pupils with their local river catchment through half-day field visits, led by trained Alder & Otter staff. We have worked with 312 schools and introduced an estimated 47,000 pupils to field ecology, water science, and species identification. All sessions are curriculum-linked and free to state schools within our catchment network.
About the programme
Each field day is designed around the National Curriculum for science and geography at Key Stages 2–4. Pupils work in small groups to test water quality, identify macroinvertebrates as indicators of river health, record plant species on the riverbank, and, where conditions allow, observe signs of otters and water voles. Sessions are led by our Education Officers, with class teachers participating throughout. Risk assessments are prepared for every site.
What a field day looks like
A typical visit runs from 09:30 to 13:00 at a riverside site within reasonable distance of your school. Pupils work in rotating groups of six, each completing a different activity station: water chemistry testing, invertebrate sampling, vegetation survey, and a riverbank walk with species identification cards. The session ends with a group debrief where pupils share their findings and discuss what the data tells us about the health of the river.
