Our work
Alder & Otter runs five active conservation programmes, each designed to address a specific aspect of freshwater ecosystem recovery. Together they form an integrated approach: restore the river channel, monitor the water quality, bring the next generation to the riverbank, protect the species that depend on clean rivers, and build the political will to protect what is being restored.
Our five programmes
Each programme is managed by a dedicated staff team and supported by trained volunteers. Together they cover 37 river catchments from Cumbria to Devon.
- River Restoration — Hands-on ecological work restoring degraded rivers and their banks.
- Water Quality Watch — Community monitoring that tracks pollution and holds polluters accountable.
- Wildlife Guardians — Protecting the species that depend on healthy rivers across our network.
- Riverside Schools — Curriculum-linked river education for schools across our catchment areas.
- Advocate for Rivers — Campaigning for legal protections and government accountability on river health.
