The numbers behind a chalk stream revival

There are approximately 200 chalk streams in the world. Around 160 of them are in England. They are, by any ecological standard, extraordinary habitats: fed by groundwater filtered through chalk aquifers, they maintain a near-constant temperature year-round, support distinctive communities of invertebrates found nowhere else, and historically provided the conditions in which wild brown trout could thrive. They are also, in the majority of cases, in poor ecological condition.

In 2019, Alder & Otter began a five-year monitoring programme on a twelve-kilometre stretch of chalk stream in north Hampshire, in partnership with a local angling club and the landowner. The stream had been partially canalised in the late nineteenth century and subjected to periodic weed-cutting and dredging throughout the twentieth. It was ecologically impoverished: invertebrate diversity was low, the characteristic macrophyte beds of watercress and water crowfoot had been reduced to remnant patches, and the trout population was supported primarily by stocking rather than natural recruitment.

The restoration work began in 2020 and continued over four seasons. It included the reinstatement of gravel riffles, the creation of marginal shelving to replace near-vertical cut banks, the removal of redundant drainage structures, and the cessation of routine dredging. The angling club agreed to halt stocking on the restored stretch to allow the monitoring team to assess natural recruitment.

The five-year data, published internally in December 2024, shows measurable improvement across all key indicators. Invertebrate richness — the number of distinct taxa recorded at each survey point — increased by an average of 34 per cent across the twelve monitoring stations. Water crowfoot cover increased from 4 per cent to 23 per cent of channel area. And in the autumn 2024 survey, the monitoring team recorded naturally recruited juvenile trout at eight of the twelve stations — up from two in 2020.

These are not dramatic numbers. Chalk stream restoration is a slow process measured in decades, not seasons. But they are moving in the right direction, consistently, across five years of independent monitoring. That is what evidence-based conservation looks like.
